A Marapu Funeral
While traveling in Sumba, Indonesia i got invited to attend a funeral ceremony. According to the Marapu belief there is life after death. The coffin of the dead person is covered with Ikat and the dead persons are buried in megalithic family graves.
The ceremony involves animal sacrifices of water buffalos, pigs and sometimes horses. It is a huge expense for the family and the relatives where many travel with animals to be offered as sacrifices for the dead to enable them a easy transition to after life.
It was a powerful moment where a family lost their mother and father with in days and where many gathered to offer their gifts and support. 11 water buffalos where slaughtered this day, it was one of the hardest moments i have photographed.
